How Onramp Withdrawals Work and How Long They Take
Jackson Mikalic | Head of Business Development
You can withdraw your bitcoin from Onramp whenever you choose. You start the request from your dashboard, complete a quick identity check, confirm it on two short video calls, one with Onramp and one with BitGo Trust, and your bitcoin is on its way within 24 to 48 hours. The two calls are there for one reason: nothing moves without your permission, and no single institution, Onramp included, can move your bitcoin on its own.

Why Withdrawals Take Two Confirmations
The question behind most withdrawal questions is not really about speed. It is whether handing custody to someone else means giving up control. At Onramp it does not. Three institutions protect your bitcoin, no one of them can lose it, move it, or use it, and it takes two of three institutions to move it. A withdrawal is how that works in practice: you initiate it through your Onramp account, and two independent institutions each verify, separately, that the request really came from you.
That separation matters more every year. Deepfake video, stolen identity documents, and physical coercion are the realistic ways bitcoin gets taken from people now. A single custodian that verifies you once is one convincing fake away from sending your bitcoin to someone else. Two independent verifications by two separate companies, each with its own team and its own review, is a much harder system to fool. How Multi-Institution Bitcoin Custody Protects Against Deepfakes goes deeper on this.
Each Step of a Withdrawal
- You start the request in your Onramp dashboard, with the amount and the address you want the bitcoin sent to.
- You verify your identity. A liveness check matches a live selfie to your government ID, and AI deepfake analysis checks the video, the selfie, and your device for signs of impersonation or distress.
- You confirm it with Onramp. You schedule a recorded video call with Onramp's Client Success team, verify your identity, and confirm the withdrawal details. A separate internal team at Onramp then reviews the recording and approves the request before Onramp completes its part of the transaction.
- You confirm it with BitGo Trust. Onramp coordinates a second video call, this time with BitGo Trust, where you confirm your identity and the details again. BitGo Trust reviews the call under its own compliance procedures, completes the transaction, and broadcasts it to the bitcoin network.
CoinCover, the third institution, does not take part in normal withdrawals. Its role is recovery, if Onramp ever cannot act. What Happens to Your Bitcoin if Onramp Goes Away? explains that process.
How Long a Withdrawal Takes
Your bitcoin is on its way within 24 to 48 hours. Where it lands in that window depends on when you finish your two video calls:
- Onramp completes its part in batches. If your Onramp call is done before 2:00 PM Central, Onramp completes its part by the end of that business day. After 2:00 PM Central, it is done by the end of the next business day.
- BitGo Trust signs around the clock, usually within a few hours of your BitGo Trust call, which you can complete any time after Onramp's part is done.
Onramp signs during normal business hours, so a request started on a Friday afternoon or over a weekend will generally be completed by Onramp on the next business day.
The fastest way through is to book both calls promptly. If you know a withdrawal is coming, starting the request early in a business day saves most of a day. Apart from when you book your calls, and weekends pushing Onramp's part to the next business day, the only thing that adds time is a delay you choose to add yourself through Onramp Guardian, described below.
Withdrawing From Anywhere
Nothing about a withdrawal depends on where you are. You log in to your Onramp account, start the request, and complete the two video calls, so the process works the same from home, from an office, or from another country. There is no Onramp withdrawal fee. The only cost is the standard bitcoin network fee that every on-chain transaction pays.
Onramp Guardian: Controls That Add Friction on Purpose
Some clients want withdrawals to be harder, not easier, especially for bitcoin they intend to hold for decades. Onramp Guardian adds identity and time-based speed bumps to the withdrawal flow, at no extra cost:
- Withdrawal delays of 5, 10, or 20 business days, so a request waits before it can complete.
- A 365-day withdrawal freeze for long-term holdings. During the term, the freeze can only be lifted in person at one of Onramp's branch offices.
- Velocity limits, such as a maximum of 1 bitcoin per calendar month.
- Duress words, so you can signal that you are being pressured without the person pressuring you knowing.
Turning any Guardian setting off takes a video verification and a 5 business day delay, so the protection cannot be removed in a hurry by someone who is not you. These controls are useful for anyone worried about coercion, and for families who want a large holding to stay put unless there is a considered decision to move it.
Onramp Finance Accounts Work Differently
Bitcoin in an Onramp Finance account is held in cold storage at BitGo Trust, a qualified custodian, rather than in a Multi-Institution Custody vault, so withdrawals do not need two institutions. You start the request from your dashboard, and Onramp processes it after review. A video verification call is required only the first time you withdraw to a new address, or when you send more than $5,000,000 within 24 hours. You can also whitelist addresses you use regularly, and withdrawals to a whitelisted address skip the video call. Moving bitcoin from a Finance wallet into your own Multi-Institution Custody vault needs no video call at all, so upgrading to Core and moving your stack into a vault is simple.
For the step-by-step mechanics, the Help Center has the Multi-Institution Custody withdrawal process, withdrawal timing, and Finance account withdrawals.
FAQ
Can I withdraw my bitcoin whenever I want?
Yes. You can start a withdrawal from your dashboard at any time. Nothing moves without your permission, and no single institution can move your bitcoin on its own.
How long does a withdrawal from Onramp take?
Once you complete your two video calls, your bitcoin is on its way from a Multi-Institution Custody vault within 24 to 48 hours on business days, unless you have added a Guardian delay. Onramp completes its part the same business day if your Onramp video call is done before 2:00 PM Central, and BitGo Trust usually completes the transaction within a few hours of your BitGo Trust call.
Why do I need two video calls?
Each call is with a different, independent institution. Two separate confirmations make it much harder for anyone using a deepfake, stolen documents, or physical coercion to move your bitcoin, because they would need to fool two companies instead of one.
Can I make withdrawals slower on purpose?
Yes. Onramp Guardian lets you add withdrawal delays of 5, 10, or 20 business days, a 365-day freeze, monthly withdrawal limits, and duress words at no extra cost. Turning a setting off requires a video verification and a 5 business day delay.
Is there a withdrawal fee?
There is no Onramp withdrawal fee. The only cost is the standard bitcoin network fee.
Can I withdraw while traveling?
Yes. You only need to log in to your Onramp account, start the request, and complete the two video calls, which works from anywhere. Onramp signs during normal business hours, and BitGo Trust signs around the clock.
Is the process different for Onramp Finance accounts?
Yes. Finance accounts hold bitcoin in cold storage at BitGo Trust rather than in a Multi-Institution Custody vault. A video call is needed only for the first withdrawal to a new address, or for more than $5,000,000 within 24 hours, and withdrawals to whitelisted addresses skip it. Moving bitcoin from a Finance wallet into your own vault needs no video call.
